Tooth Whitening Basics

Submitted by: Camilla Lucille

A brilliant white smile and healthy teeth are just as essential to looking good as to having the right clothing, hairstyle and makeup! Teeth can be stained by bad habits (like drinking coffee or tea or smoking cigarettes) or from aging or medication. A dingy, yellow smile really detracts from your overall look and gives the impression that you do not care about your appearance or your health. A bright, white smile, on the other hand, exudes confidence and youth and can enhance your self-esteem. Many visits to the dentist are made by people looking to enhance their smiles and to rid themselves of unsightly teeth discoloration. Let s look at the basics of getting a whiter smile.

Pre-Brush Rinse

There are some high quality pre-brush rinses on the market that can be purchased at your local drugstore or big box retailer. These rinses usually contain some form of hydrogen peroxide and work to loosen plaque and bleach out tough stains. Pre-brush rinses are great for getting a few shades whiter with your smile when used in conjunction with your daily dental routine. These rinses, like Rembrandt or Listerine Whitening, can really jump start your efforts to have the best smile ever.

Toothpaste

The toothpaste that you use is very important to the quality of your smile. Opt for toothpaste that contains baking soda and is billed as whitening toothpaste. Some formulations may also have hydrogen peroxide as an active ingredient. Inversely, you can use straight baking soda right out of the box (yes, the kind that you place in the refrigerator to control odor). Just simply apply the powder to a wet toothbrush and brush as normal. Brush your teeth in a circular motion and don t overlook brushing your tongue as well; the tongue can harbor bacteria that promote the growth of plaque, which in turn, causes your teeth to be less-than-white. You should brush twice daily, although brushing three times each day is ideal.

Whitening Trays

Trays that hold a bleaching solution are popular to whiten teeth, and usually contain (again) hydrogen peroxide. Some of the tray systems that you can purchase at a regular retail outlet are very similar to those that are purchased as take-home kits from the dentist, but contain a non-prescription grade of hydrogen peroxide. That s why the trays that are sold by your dentist and used under his care are more effective than store bought kits.

Whitening Strips

Thin strips that are applied to the teeth are also effective in some formulations for whitening the teeth. These strips contain a peroxide-based formula that is activated when exposed to saliva in the mouth. Some whitening strips are to be worn during the day for a particular number of hours, while some are designed to whiten the teeth while sleeping.

In-Office Procedures

The dentist has the most effective arsenal at his disposal when it comes to whitening your teeth. The most common dental whitening occurs in the dentist office and consists of bleaching, or bleaching that is undertaken while using a laser light. This procedure can be very expensive but will yield the fastest results.

When Whitening Will Not Work

There are certain instances where teeth will not respond to whitening procedures, including the stronger whitening methods that your dentist can offer. One such situation occurs when a person s teeth are stained by tetracycline, an antibiotic medication that turns the teeth a shade of yellow. Teeth that have been stained for a long time may also fail to respond to whitening methods, as is the case for many people who have begun to age. For persons with permanent staining, teeth whitening will not work although there are other cosmetic dental procedures (such as veneers) that can correct a stained, dingy smile.
